My impression about the tourney:
When i first read the rules of chapter 1 I thought "nice tourney with good limitation not to advance too fast in the early game". At this point I think the rules are still too easy :(
Thinks I don't like:
1) rules allow exeptional/elite items... At this time I can 1 hit-kill most mobs on P16. Not mithrils of course.
2) I would limit the number of RW you can equip: no limitations for merc (they are too weak anyway), as for main char I'd say 2 or 3 RW should be enough...
3) rules focus on "can't equip" not on "can't use at all" which would include cubing. Made my first acane cube scroll today. It was really lame and I had so many spare uni jewelry... After a few rerolls i got MEGA4 to armor. "adds 59% faster run/walk, replenish life +32, all resistances +70, damage reduced by 420" (thats from wiki) is a bit too early for act2.
4) gambling: no one sells ancient armors in act 2? get enough cash and gamble for one! I kinda see a problem here as well...

Having said that I'll try to play a char acording to my own rules (not related to the tournament). If anyone is interested I'll post a full rule set on a separate thread.
it doesn't mean I'm quiting here. Once Act 3 is open I'll return to smash some more skulls.

Hi Montex,

Yes I agree in some ways that the rules are too easy but it allows players who are new to the Mod to take part and become accomplished before the really hard areas are encountered so....

1) ....enjoy it while you can being a minor god because as the tournament progresses through the various acts and difficulties and you start playing in the Insanity areas you will need all the resources you have/are allowed to have. We also have the side-quests which will not just be limited to 1 per. Act and some of them will be extremely difficult. As it is, only 1 person has managed to do the Act 1 side-quest successfully and there will be others that are equally challenging in different ways.

2) Due to forthcoming restrictions you may need more than just 2 or 3 runewords (then again you may not), you will just have to wait and see. We don't want to spoil it by posting more than 1 set of advance rules so please be patient. The only reason we post a set of advance rules is so that Hans and I aren't seen to have an unfair advantage.

3) Same answer as for 1. You are going to need all you can find/gamble/buy/cube in forthcoming Chapters and some of the side-quests (which may place more limitations). I would suggest to anyone who rolls a <Mega x to armour/weapon> to keep it for later when there is likely to be more need for it.

I hope you enjoy playing to your own rules just as long as you adhere to our rules for this tournament, which I am sure you will.

Good luck and happy Zy-Elling :)

You also stated the first few chapters were used to build you up for the harder challenges of the later chapters anyway. That's why it looks simple at first. But this mod's difficulty is based on character class and the player them self.

So I find the way this tournament being operated as normal. It will eventually get harder.

Cleaned the halls. It took a while... Collected 4324 points. 4346 with the 1.005 multiplier. My MF wasnt that great - 879% but Find items skill helped a bit.

Wait a minute. This isnt even Harrogath - how can my ancestors be burried here in this desert???"

EDIT: killed both Duriels on P8 and finished the act. When can we start Act3???

Nice work Montex. 2nd in that side-quest scoring stakes so far.

@Everyone: I've just sent Hans a PM about the possibility of us starting Chapter 3 this coming weekend since most of us have finished Chapter 2 or are close to finishing it and only czg, JrEye and Hans are still to finish Chapter 1.

Just waiting for Hans' reply.

Well I finally managed to do the sidequest and did it on 127 of course. Reason my score is so darned low is that I wasn't in the mood for grinding and just wanted it done - so no extra MF gear except for converted ChoMs. I was a little bit lucky tho as I dropped 1 unique and 5 setpieces (junk tho).

I don't know when I'll be starting Chapter 3 as I am a little busy these days but we shall see.

Hmm - she didn't last too long before dying (cornered by something or other), and as I can't see the point of not having a perfect score this early in a tournament I'm retiring her and would like to start from scratch with a fresh character in Act I (Al - please tell me if this isn't going to be allowed) - new character is a Summoner Druid (no idea if this is viable, but 32 ravens early in act 1 is fun).

It was fun while it lasted - which was as far as the underground passage, where he walked too fast, and ran into a pack of the lightning belching things and paid the price of having a sunnoner's life...

Not sure if I'm going to try again, I'm not too inspired right now.

When you face Misshapen, you need to do hit and runs with your Ravens. You also got a Poison Creeper which provides SOME distraction for your birds.

32 Birds should be enough to slaughter them, unless you played on a higher PX setting.

You shouldn't have to restart the tournament over one death. You can do Chapter 2's Subquest on Players127 and cancel out your loss.

When Chapter 4 comes, you can pitch up for high magic find and catch up to the rest of our Evolution Modifiers.

I so far have the highest since I was the only person who successfully completed the Subquest in Chapter 1.

Hello, Lut Gholein! Blood found the members of this community to be somewhat more charming than do River or Suwayyah, but give him time to get to know them, and he will undoubtedly become as jaded as the rest.

Blood's first magic item was a Fire Golem small charm. I can see them as constant companions for a long, long time to come. After equipping the charm, he also donned magic rings and a magic amulet, all of which had gold find on them: 107% on the amulet, 58% and 57% on the rings.

Four levels were gained (up to 70 now, watching them very closely so I don't miss the opportunity to do the Chapter One side quest!) clearing the sewers at players 4, just to be safe. Radament went down without a hitch, though it turns out he can throw a punch as well as cast spells! Who knew? It took just a few seconds of beating on him to get him to fall over, undead.

I am undecided as to whether Blood will continue at p4 in Act II or go back and do p8-p16 runs in Act I to get those last 5 levels.

My decision was to forge ahead, so Blood set off into the desert at p8, having no troubles whatsoever. Bad decision! Level 72 with 5k life, and nothing was taking any life from him, so it was completely unexpected when a group of Bone Golems and a group of Rhino Demons surrounded him and actually killed him. I get that the Rhino Demons stun and cold-slow, but that does not explain why he died. Neither of those two packs of monsters on their own had any chance at all to kill him. Mysterious.

I knew that he would die, and I know that this will not be even close to the last death that Blood suffers, but it still sucks when it happens and lowers your score. Boohoo, poor me! Ok, I'm over it. :P

Moved back to Act I and the Chapter One thread for a bit, finished that side quest, and closed the books on it. Well, my part of the books, at least. :P

------------

[EDIT]

Bloodmist did a bunch of runs in the sewers, the pit, the catacombs, all sorts of places to get a few levels. His goal was level 100 for his new helm, a Primal runeword. However, he could not wear the base item, a conqueror crown from one of at least half a dozen “any helm to primal helm” scrolls, until he had the strength for it. Pumping stats purely into strength allowed him to wear it by level 104.

The next goal was level 110 for his new weapons, a pair of Flagbearer runewords set into ethereal Divine Scepters. The base item, the War Sceptre, is not sold yet in Act II, and they cannot be gambled. He found five of them by the time he was about level 90, but the sixth did not drop until level 118! Part of the reason that he was bouncing all over the place while gaining levels was that I was desperately seeking the place he had been where they were dropping so prolifically. I thought for sure that it was the Lut Gholein Sewers, but after five runs there, not a single one had dropped, so he went looking elsewhere. Turns out they were mostly dropping out in the desert, right before his tragic death.

At that point he headed toward level 120, to finish off his skills and meet the requirements to wear a Wealthy runeword. He is still not wearing Wealthy, as his handler is still debating as to whether or not to use it at all for the side quest. I'm thinking that a six-socket high-defense armor with six topazes would be the better choice. Either way, the modified Pride armor he has is too good to replace for normal play, so he'll continue to wear that right up until he starts the quest.

After 120, he made a Brambles runeword with a 19% enhanced damage magic jewel in a pair of Vambraces that he gambled from Elzix. He has several much better damage jewels, but they are all rare, and we still have not found a good rare item that we are willing to commit to for the balance of Act II. The goal is to advance through the act, complete all the quests through the Arcane Sanctuary, clear out the True Tomb, find and open the entrance to Duriel's chamber, then do the side quest, Duriel, and move to Act III. With such a short space of time between the start of the side quest and the end of the chapter, it is at that point that he will equip his first rare, as the commitment time will be as short as possible. He has a nice 41% magic find amulet, but to use it he loses 114% extra gold, which is just not worth it until he is done farming gold. Yes, the easiest solution to equipping a rare would be a small charm, but after creating four dozen of them, not a single good one has appeared!

Next was the process of finding/upgrading his belt. He was gambling for exceptional plated belts (war belts) in order to upgrade them to a colossus girdle (which, it turns out, would have been a rules violation – see below about the boots), when he was favoured by the appearance of a war belt with 120% extra gold on it! Used a “two sockets to any item” scroll on it, slapped in a pair of perfect topazes, and that will last until at least the end of the chapter.

It was time to do some serious inventory rearrangement. The poster he was using was not as good as it could have been, so I went browsing through his growing collection, looking for better ones. I remembered a comment from someone about Grendels possibly doing magic damage, so I focused on the posters that offer magic reduction. A Sailor Moon with over 700 life was the obvious choice there. As well, I wanted to give him more physical damage. All of his skills boost physical and life leech works off of how much physical is done. Manny was the right poster for that, again with over 700 life and over 500 damage. The 45 points of damage reduction is a nice bonus.

I kept the life stick with 500 life, but tossed out the one with three rubies and a skull – I decided that 8,000 life would be sufficient until non-charm sources were more readily available. As he gradually attained more levels, vitality, and life, I dropped a couple smaller +life charms as well, keeping the total at around 8k. The Gigantor hex charm that he was using was great, but now that he had acquired Natural Resistance and the sweet 122 resist all from his Primal helm, he could afford to sacrifice some of the resists (+48) on the Gigantor for the chance at better life gain. Ten Gigantors later, he had upgraded from +24% increased max life to +25%! Come on!! As he failed time after time to make a better charm, he could hear Fara over there near the wall, gaily tossing her hammer and snickering at his predicament. It was all I could do to keep Blood from bashing her teeth into the back of her head with his semi-transparent Hammers of Face Smashing.

Lastly, I replaced the Healer and the Defender ChoMs with a pair of Shields for the life and the combined 50% damage reduction, replaced the Destroyer with a Slayer for better Crushing Blow and Ignore Target's Defense, and removed the Icer completely. Life drain was then 3 per second, but with 8k life (11.5k with Battle Orders) plus lots of life being leeched, that was a non-issue.

With the new weapons, a rearranged inventory, higher Mace Mastery, dexterity, and strength, Bloodmist had transformed into a pure killing machine! He was not invincible, not by any means, but he slaughtered everything he had so far encountered with grace, poise, and in a right hurry even at players 127. This is the first character I've played that handles Mithril Knights without any problems at all. Suwayyah could kill them fairly easily with enough Charged Bolt Sentries, but it took a little running around to get them in the CBS fields – if they touched her, she didn't live long. With Bloodmist, there is no worry at all. They don't fall as quickly as everything else, of course, but they are no danger, even in large packs. Frenzy is absolutely marvelous, dealing out pain in a furious hail of hammer blows too quick for the eye to follow (divine sceptres show a hammer on the toon when wielded). Whirlwind is too low yet to handle high-life monsters such as Knights, but it mows down most packs in a flash.

The only problem so far with his setup is the 25% flee on each of his weapons – that is a huge help with crowd control when fighting way out of your league, but when you are master and commander of 98% of the fights you get into, fleeing monsters are a curse-worthy annoyance after a little while. It would be sooooo easy to use a scroll to add freeze to his weapon(s) (frozen monsters don't flee!), but I want lots of corpses for Find Item during the side quests. Consequently, the Icer ChoM went back into inventory. :P A better solution would be to make another pair of weapons, having one pair with freeze, and another pair without. That has the major benefit of freeing up four inventory slots. If he finds four more war sceptres (he has two now), he will probably do it.

Ok, there is another problem with his setup, I lied! Brambles casts frost nova on striking 7% of the time. This creates a lot of shattered corpses even without the Icer. For the side quest, Blood will use a pair of 4-socket heavy gauntlets with two Shaels for the IAS and two +9% MF jewels. I've found that the 40% IAS from the Brambles brings the “slow” hits (before Frenzy really kicks in) up to a respectable enough speed to actually hit the fleeing mobs once in a while, so I don't want him to lose that.

Did most of the rest of the act at players 64. When Blood got down to the umberhulks, I lowered it to p16, and for Fire Eye, dropped it down to a bargain-basement setting of 1! I sure am glad I did, because he would have killed Blood otherwise. He is one tough nugget :!: :!: He has not gone into Duriel's domicile as yet, but nothing else was difficult, to the best of my recollection (which is, after all, not saying a whole lot these days).

After the Staff was assembled, Blood took one of the 1k collectors he had made and turned his Kirby poster into this:
BloodAlbum.jpg
BloodAlbum.jpg (180.61 KiB) Viewed 5889 times
I'm not sure why I wasn't showing the stats of it in the picture... 833 max dmg, 395 life, 17 replenish life, damage reduced by 68. Not worth using, but worth making for the points!

The last item before level 160 that he needed to upgrade was his Pattern runeword boots. There are some nice runewords available, like Bulldog, but nothing he needs right now, so I decided to make a pair of Boneweave (elite chain) boots filled with extra gold and magic find. I chose the chain version because that is what he's been collecting to upgrade – light plated boots and greaves just aren't dropping yet, and my gambling has been getting out of hand. I had everything ready to combine, stopped a moment to recount it all in my mind before transmuting, and realized that I was about to use crafted items to upgrade gear that he was going to wear! No no no! Not wanting to violate the rules, I took everything back out and just made a pair of mesh (exceptional chain) boots instead. A few magic jewels to give them 28% extra gold and 44% MF, and they were port-a-prete!

Level 160 was the final goal I wanted Blood to achieve before continuing through the side quest and into Act III. That is the required level for the “Cunning” primal helm runeword, the shining jewel of primal helms. For the base item, none of the other “any helm to primal helm” scrolls had created anything at all useful, so he threw his runic conqueror crown in the cube with an “any armor to magic armor” scroll and rerolled it. That made me a little uneasy, but there was no other option. It was a little tricky to make, what with the required Pul and Ist runes. A Ko rune downgraded to a Lum, combined with a “Lum to Um” scroll, downgraded to give the Pul. 9 Ko runes (1.2 million gold) combined to give a Lem, combined with a “Lem to Gul” scroll, downgraded to give the Ist, and voila! The best helm this side of a Requiem. Added the six “bar1 to any helm” scrolls he'd been saving for this exact piece of heavenly gear, along with 120% worth of Faster Hit Recovery scrolls – +19 barbarian skills, 2k defense, 900 life, 185 resists, 134 damage redux... I may not even use a requiem at all! Time will tell. And assuming that we ever evolve to the point of using artifacts at all.

I decided to make one last attempt at creating a good Gigantor before allowing him to get back to the killing fields... and it paid off! A very healthy "increase maximum life 47%" makes Bloodmist a happy, happy barbie :!: Finally he could get rid of his +500 life stick to make more room for MF charms.

Half of the True Tomb has been explored (the half with the entrance to Duriel's chambers), and he is all set for the side quest now, apart from the last bits of farming to get the remaining 20 or so perfect topazes that he needs.

Good luck to you all in your endeavors!

Glad you did eventually get one with 47%. You don't mention in your post after that, how much life Blood has or is it still around 8k without and 11.5k with B.O. :?:

I did sod that for a game of soldiers! After the game was over (I lost horribly, btw), and I had taken out my frustrations on every moving critter in a 10 mile radius of the booze-sodden city gates of Lut Gholein, that is when I came back and trie once more, gritting my teeth in expectation of yet another colossal failure.
You don't mention in your post after that, how much life Blood has...
It's still around 8k, but his Battle Orders level has increased... anyway, see below for the answer to your question. :)

-----------

Did a few more shrine runs to try to get the remaining perfect topazes needed, but it was taking so long, so I suppressed the part of me that hates spending that hard-earned gold and made the rest of them. I purchased flawed topazes and converted them to flawless. Bloodmist had accumulated a bunch of elixirs during the shrine runs (running them at p64 and killing any unique monsters that he ran into, actually going out of his way to cut down Bishibosh and Rakanishu, yielded a lot of elixirs and demon boxes over the course of dozens and dozens of runs). Two flawless topazes and an elixir combine to make a lovely perfect topaz. If you have to buy the elixirs, you save 13% over not using elixirs. If you already have the elixirs, you save 33%. Either way, you save both gold and mouse clicks!

Everything seemed to be in order, so Blood donned his first rare item:
BloodFirstRare.jpg
BloodFirstRare.jpg (68.79 KiB) Viewed 5872 times
The final tally turned out to be a better-than-expected 1512% Better Chance at Getting Magic Items. With his side quest gear donned, I increased Find Item up to 38, for a 38% chance of success, Mace Mastery up to 110 for 573% increased damage, and Battle Orders up to 31 for 110% increased life and 3.5 minute duration. The answer to Al-Tisaur's question is: Bloodmist's life is 8248/14766 with/without Battle Orders. He deals 2.9k to 13.5k damage per blow with Frenzy.

He went out into the Dry Hills at players 127 to make sure that everything was copacetic, and discovered that he still had cold damage lurking somewhere, causing too much shattering. It turns out that it was all over the place – two charms and both weapons were infected! A few minutes worth of applying reduction recipes (which, thankfully, require no “illegal” items to accomplish) cleaned it all up, and he was ready to go!

Reading these threads through before I joined the tournament, I found that much of the information that I was craving was not being provided – stats, equipment setup, reasons for choosing specific items, etc. The reports that the contestants were giving were wonderful, but I wanted more! With his explanation of his MF setup Hellwolf came the closest to what I was hoping to find, at least for that one topic. Thanks, Hellwolf! That is one of the reasons that I am taking up so much space with my updates – I'm hoping to provide anyone else who has that same thirst I had, with what they crave. Everyone else can just gloss over them, or DownPage right on by. No problem. :P

With that in mind, I am going to provide a breakdown of where and how much MF Bloodmist was using:
  • Amulet 41% with a PTop, 66% total.
  • Rings 15% and 19%, both with 10% jewels, 54% total.
  • Helm was WAY too good to dedicate to the cause, but the Cunning runeword has 15% inherent.
  • Torso 6-socketed cuirass with 6 PTops, 150% total.
  • Gloves two Shaels and two 9% jewels, 18% total.
  • Belt two PTops, 50% total.
  • Boots three 10% jewels and a 14% jewel, 44% total.
  • Manny poster 63%, Sailor Moon poster 70%, 133% total.
  • Nine 4-socket tall charms with 4 PTops each, 900% total.
  • One 2-socket large charm with life, defense, and 2 PTops, 50% total.
  • Two 7% small charms each with 9% jewels, 32% total.
  • Gigantor hex charm, grand charm with Increase Maximum Life +15% and +15% Enhanced Defense, Fire Golem small charm with 716 life and 434 mana, Slayer ChoM, 2 x Shield Chom, ID and TP books, and the Cube round out his inventory.
It took 170 levels to amass all the 9%-14% MF jewels, the large and small charms, and those three pieces of jewelry, but it was worth it! Inventory is completely full, so picking things up is going to be a frustration, but again, worth it.

I expect that this is going to take a while, so I'm going to post this part now, and edit in the result.

Meanwhile, good luck to all of you in your adventures!

[EDIT]

Booya, baby!! Find Item comes through for Team Barbie:
BloodSideQuestTwoResult.jpg
BloodSideQuestTwoResult.jpg (130.99 KiB) Viewed 5860 times
Four unique items, including Chance Guards (which were incredibly difficult to let go! I should never have identified them, though I already knew exactly what unique chain gloves would be...) dropped, and six set items, four of which were rings. Unless you are a pack rat yourself, you have no idea how hard it was to put all of those magic and rare jewels, rings, and amulets into the cube and *poof* them into the collector...

There were not a whole lot of Boogey Men along the way, unfortunately. There were dozens and dozens and dozens of Scourges to make up for it, however. Other than Returned, Scourges were by far the most-represented baddie. There were all of two packs of Sunders, no Knights or Wraiths at all, and about half a dozen packs of those lightning bats. Other than that, I think it was just Hollow Ones, mummies, and Bone Golems. Oh yeah, and cats - melee, javelin and potion cats, but not that many of them.

There were a couple of tense moments when Bloodmist found himself surrounded by hordes of Returned and Blood Golems, but a couple of full rejuvs and timely use of Whirlwind were more than adequate to surmount the difficulty. It took me over five hours of intermittent play over the last 18 hours to get it done - I'm not sure if that is more of a testament to how laborious the process was, or a reflection of my inadequacies as an efficient player. The jury is still out on that one! Nevertheless, it was a "blast, blast, blast," to quote an Ancient Relic, and I'm eager to continue on this journey in the footsteps of the great players who have gone before me. Onward!

ps - Before I forget (again), I wanted to give major props to Montex for guiding me through the initial stages of this journey, though he has no idea that he has done so. I have pored over, combed through, read, and re-read dozens of times every post he's made in all of these Evolution Chapter threads. Except for the advice offered by Al (thanks again, Al!), many, if not most, of the decisions, skills, and items I've made, applied, and used have been through his direct example. *tips his hat to Montex* Thanks for leading the way, sir. :)

Finished up the act at players 64 with no problems. Took the boat with the dubious Meshif to "glorious" Kurast, bottom of the barrel civilization-wise, and proud protector of stink and putrescence in all its various and sundry miasmic forms. But they do serve up some mighty fine curry dishes! I'm guessing there is a connection between the two, but I shudder to think what exactly that link might entail...

Edit: Uhoh....I am SO not used to some of the vanilla D2 stuff in this mod. Like mercs levels being so low. I recall in vanilla, that if you were way above your mercs level, they won't gain any experience. I recall having to laboriously go to lesser areas and just watch as my merc killed everything. Like watching paint dry. Please tell me this isn't the case in this mod. I want an act 2 merc, but they're almost 50 levels below my character! Will they gain experience at a normal rate, if I venture forward in act 2?

Welcome to Chapter 2 Billy and congratulations being only the second player to have a "perfect" EM at this stage (Chapter 1 + side quest = 1.010) :D

Your merc should level okay at higher Players settings i.e. 8 and above but you will have to give him really good gear to survive. Alternatively, if you go back to Act 1 from Black Marsh onwards at P8 or above, and you both do the killing he will possibly level even faster for about 10-15 levels, then you can return to Act 2. Don't just let him do the killing though, he will need your help no matter where you play.

Good luck and happy Zy-Elling :)

Hmm....we're on our way to Radamant, and he's doing fine, and gained 2 levels already in level 1.....I guess we'll see how it goes.

Players 8, by the way....going to stick to that, as long as it works.

It's good to see that someone else besides me managed to beat the "Gauntlet of killer Dark Ones".

It's not good to see that someone beat me in Act 2. The ability to search corpses again for loot is gonna REALLY hurt me in the next subquests.

 You could have picked a Barb but you did not.

There will be plenty more side-quests and even main tournament play that redress "what you think is an imbalance". So worry not my friend, the rules are not geared towards one class or player.

Remember we are only playing at Chapter 4 of 15 and that does not include the side-quests ;)

Oh, I am not complaining about losing to a Barbarian, but the gap between me and Clersius will be quite large at the end of these item pickup quests.

He has been doing it fair and square under the rules and this tournament is about having fun.

Also, as you pointed out, there are still 11 chapters of glorious hell left :).
