When using whirlwind part of the fantasy to me would be that it can hit multiple targets and the barb can jump into a wall of enemies and go ham.
Is there a way to do this via skills.txt/missiles.txt while still allowing the character to animate spin and also be able to move?
AoE based Whirlwind possible? (1.13c)

Hi zjat, it is possible. You can add in a Blaze skill that releases aoe weapon damage novas as you move. If you make the radius small enough, it will only hit enemies that you are phasing through with Whirlwind. You could also use some complex Volcano missile interactions to make it so that the Blaze will only release the weapon damage explosions while whirlwinding.
